Russian Cup

Many Russian migrants to Australia in the 1950s and 1960s used to play volleyball.  As such their love of the sport continued in Australia originally as social teams, and eventually as higher skilled and competitive players.

In 1991 the first national organised tournament for players of russian descent was organised.  This was the first Russian Volleyball Cup tournament and was held in Geelong 1991.

Since that time it has been an annual tournament,  and played in a different city/town every year.  Teams from all over Australia have  participated, including: Dandenong, Geelong, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney RSA and Sydney Vostok. The Russian cup is as exciting and promising as ever. The tournament is held over a number of days and is a great way to meet people from the Russian community as well as play volleyball on a competitive level.  The tournament not only has Russian players,  it has a variety of different nationalities including Polish, Greek, Serbian, Croatian, Cambodian, Chinese, Samoan, Irish.  It is a multicultural event with Russian heritage.

The 2009 Russian cup was held in Dandenong, and was a fantastic display of skill and competition.  Both indoor team and beach volleyball were played.  Recently new club Canberra has joined in with impressive wins, and will be hosting the 2010 tournament.
